William Hurt and Marcia Gay Harden have joined the cast of Paramount's INTO THE WILD. They will join Emile Hirsch, Vince Vaughn and Catherine Keener in the cast for the film.

The film is based on a non-fiction book and centers on Christopher McCandless (Hirsch), who graduated from college in 1992, abandoned his possessions and hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wilderness and return to nature. He died four months later in an abandoned bus at a remote campsite. Hurt and Harden will play McCandless' parents.

INTO THE WILD will be written and directed by Sean Penn.

I read this book and I can honestly say that I never, for one second, thought about it being a movie. The book is mainly about the years between graduation and the fatal trip to Alaska and is told from the perspective of the people that met him along the way. You're torn between sympathizing with the guy and thinking he's kind of a moron for thinking he could get by in the Alaskan widerness with a 22. rifle and bag of white rice.

Movie should be titled "Dumbass."

This sort of reminds me of that movie about the Bear guy, who goes out in the wilderness to study grizzly bears, then stupidly and ironically gets gets killed and eaten by one. They should have a series of these called "Dumbass".

They do have a series, it's called the "Darwin Awards" and can be found on the web.

Just as a side note, this book was written by the the same Author as "Into Thin Air" about the deadliest season on Everest. Both are very good reads...but yes there was a certain dumbassness to McCandless.

Yeah, I read and liked the book and agree with some of you about him being a dumbass. I think he was just looney tunes from the start. I don't know about a movie on this though. I can see him in the Alaskan wild as he first sees the "villian," bad berries...cue music.
