Watchmen means awesomeness in graphic novel form and soon to be awesomeness in film form. It also holds a special place in my heart cause it helped me win the book Watchmen: The Official Film companion.
Watchmen #1 was my intro in '86. It made me see comics and heroes in a new light. Been in love with them since. Years of pleasure.
I became aware of the Watchmen years ago when wizard did a list of some of the great characters of comics and Rorschach was in there. I thought he was a great character, but it was until recently that I actually sat down and read the book cover-to-cover. It was a good read. Deffinately not your typical cape and cowl story. There so much history, when it begins it's like walking in on a conversation where everyone knows what's going on but you. It's a book that takes time and a little patience to immerse yourself in. Once you do however, you'll be glad that you did. I look forward to the film as well as the dvd comic that's being released.
I was a comic book junkie when this originally came out. Alan Moore's name was enough to get my interest as I was already a fan of his work through Swamp Thing and some of the british imports. Needless to say it blew me away! I collected all of the issues as they were released, and invested in the graphic novel collection just so I could share it with others. Moore did an incredible job exposing the dark side of superhero lore. It was a great jolt to the state of the comics industry at that time. The news exposure brought people that had tucked away their childhood memories back into the comic shops. It was suddenly cool again to read comics. It also inspired other writers to bring a little more depth to their characters. The Watchmen is truly a "Classic" that deserves top shelf attention. I hope to feel the same about the film.
I first read the graphic novel version of Watchmen some 3 years ago and loved it. I love reading comics and thought then that it would make a good movie so I hope my expectatins are met. i haven't been disapointed by what i have seen yet.
It was years of getting in arguements in class that no one is good willed. Everyone has faults. That people were chaotic and authority was crazy. I went so far as to say that humanitarians even bask in their glory because they too are human. I wasn't an idealist so you can imagine how teachers and friends and classmates that still wanted to "change the world" took it. I went so far as to talk about having a universal threat (referring to War of the Worlds and sci fi movies) will end all prejudices with each other. No one took me seriously.
I picked up Watchmen and everything I believed in, every class speech and one against 30 discussions was there. The flawed characters, war and it's affect on people, A UNIVERSAL ENEMY. Everything. This graphic novel was me.
I'm watching it because I love the comic and how much it relates to my beliefs. And also because the same people who called me an idiot are now quoting Veidt and Rorschach and the Comedian and can't wait to see the movie.
I read the graphic novel form about 6 years ago and fell in love with it instantly. I had been a big collector before the bubble burst and I was aware of it but had not read it. I picked it up becuase, even though I no longer collected, comics still had a place in my heart. I really loved how well the book was fleshed out. It felt like, yeah if there were really were superheroes, it might really be like this. I loved all of the conflict that all of the characters exhibited and I loved the background story of characters from the past. Just becuase you are a super hero does not always mean that you act heroically, and even if you don't, people will still want you in their time of need. When I read something or listen to something that connects, it becomes a part of me and changes me from who I was before I read it to who I am after I have read it. When someone mentions Watchmen, it becomes more of a personal conversation that a fanboy conversation.
I had always been a fan of comics since being a kid, but never really accepted it as a passion. Then after a bad relationship I decided to do something for myself and took a comic book literature class. It was in that class that I was introduced to the Watchmen and that my passion took over. I enjoyed Watchmen not just for the escape or because it showed that comic books could be a serious literary form, or even because it inspired me as a writer. For me Watchmen showed that no matter your background anyone could be a superhero and even though doing the right thing was not easy or even clear that in the end the things we do define us. I am excited for the movie because it means a new generation will be introduced to the Watchmen. Sure their vision may not be the same as what Moore intended, but whose vision is ever the same anyway. Hopefully, after the release of the movie people will turn to the comic book as a literary genre making it more acceptable in our world.
WATCHMEN..I picked up the First Issue way back when because I wanted to see how DC changed the Chaleston Comic Characters. And low and behold, I found more than I bargained for in the first issue. And smacked myself when I missed the second issue. Now, I am going to go check out this movie to see how Warner Brothers changed this movie from the book. I hope if I get into my seat late the movie does not make me feel like I did when I missed issue two. But how I felt readying issue one.
I first got to read Watchmen about 13 years ago and I got it because people say that every superhero comicbook reader must read this at some point. I liked it back then but not as much when I re-read it last year.
The movie for me is just something to watch for me, nothing really special. It's just that I've read the book before and it will be interesting to see how the movie goes. Once I get to see the film, that's when I will form an opinion about it.
So there it is, very cautious answers from me.
