Universal Pictures' planned prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing just grabbed two lead stars. HR's Heat Vision reports that Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton will star in the prequel, which centers on the Norwegian camp in the frozen tundra of Antarctica last seen in the 1982 film.  Matthijs Van Heijningen is directing from a screenplay by Ronald D. Moore and Eric Heisserer. Strike Entertainment's Marc Abraham and Eric Newman are producing and production will begin March 15 in Toronto.

Plot Concept: Winstead will play a Ph.D. candidate who joins a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after it discovers an alien ship in the ice. When a trapped organism is freed and begins a series of attacks, she is forced to team with a blue-collar mercenary helicopter pilot (Edgerton) to stop the rampage.

Although she's 26, she's a bit young and WAY TO PRETTY to be some kind of astro-biologistype sent to hang around with haggard Norweigen men at an Antartic outpost in1980. (I think I've seen this movie before, but it was shot on 8mm and had surprisinly good lighting) I'll stil give this movie this movie a chance . Curious to see how the direcrtor weaves his version into Carpenter's version and if he attempts th emulate his style as well. I hear that Winstead is supposed to be talented, but her character, like all the others at the Norweigen camp are doomed to die very horrible deaths.

John Carpenters The Thing is a CLASSIC and one of my BEST horror movies out there. I am really looking forward to this and hope it will be as good as The Thing. :-)

For 1982 the movie is Still impressive with effects, if anything, better than CGI, which I'm sure they're gonna use this time around. Now, if they get Rob Bottin to create the creature effects again, it'll keep a certain tone to its ferocity.

I hope they know what they're doing, about 30 yrs ago there were only satellite phones (for use of military, authority, or scientific use, if something needed that was portable). The only internet in use was just contact from one computer source to another, but not like today. NO CELL phones. And a hint of the 70's remained.

I was born in 80, seen Carpenter's movie many times, he had a certain feel to the work, and he kept it creepy. I doubt they'll be able to pull off the same. But the less CGI, perhaps the better.

This is as silly as Denise Richards playing a nuclear physicist in James Bond or Tara Reid being an anthropologist in that awful Alone in the Dark

I tell you what, my expectations for this prequel just went way down, too bad cause The Thing was just such an awesome and underrated movie when it came out. Talk about being ahead of the curve. Next we'll be hearing they're aiming for a pg13 rating. Hope I'm wrong

wolfman, what's up my man. You've been pretty scarce around here for months. Oh, wait now I get it, Wolfman opens next week and just by coincidence you pop up., hmmm

Yeah the leads alone with the whole “blue-collar mercenary helicopter pilot” plot may have just turned me off of this. I will let the trailer come out but I am not expecting much at all now. I think they (Universal) should have sought out Darabont or even Nolan for this.

well i have bashed remakes in the past but after seeing trailers for the wolfman i'll stay optimistic but wont get my hopes up

It Wont be as good because Kurt Russell as RJ MacReady wont be in it haha.

I liked John Carpenters Idea for a Sequal and would much rather see that. Here was the idea.

In 2004, John Carpenter said in an Empire Magazine interview[13] that he has a story idea for The Thing II, which centers around the two surviving characters, MacReady and Childs. However, Carpenter felt that due to the higher price associated with his fee, Universal Studios will not pursue his storyline. Carpenter indicated that he would be able to secure both Kurt Russell and Keith David for the sequel. In his story, Carpenter would explain the age difference between the two actors by having frostbite on their face due to the elements until rescued. The assumption of the sequel would rely on a radio signal being successfully transmitted by Windows before Blair destroyed the communications room. Thus, after the explosion of the base camp, the rescue team would arrive and find MacReady and Childs still alive. Carpenter has not disclosed any other details.

The prequal idea is kinda lame. ok so they find the ship ok we know this already and know they get wiped out haha. Hell with it.

Maybe if John Carpenter were directing but sorry this is gonna fail.

Muenster and Wise… this character may be overly modern, but it actually isn’t too unrealistic. Winstead is playing a PhD student (not someone who’s completed such a program), so 26-years of age makes sense. Plus, I know of a number of college undergraduates who study abroad in Antartica (albeit for a very short stint of time)--- so the idea of a doctoral student doing so isn’t that far-fetched.

Granted, Winstead's extreme attractiveness may seem a bit--- well--- extreme. But there are some highly attractive science types, and since Hollywood almost always casts the beautiful people, I don't think there's much of a reason to make an exception here.

They actually did have a sequel but it was a mini series in comics.  I read it but a long time ago...don't remember much about it except I didn't really care for it.

I would have been happy if John Carpenter would have been involved in this.  Like you guys I'm a huge fan of his movie and some of the special effects do hold up while I have to admit others don't.  The story still holds weight as he took just enough things from from the short story added with his own and it worked.

I'll give this a chance but I'm not excited about it.  Maybe the lower expectations will help it in the end.
