Just a week after Robert De Niro dropped out of the thriller Edge of Darkness over "creative differences", GK Films and director Martin Campbell have found a replacement. Variety reports thespian Ray Winstone (The Proposition) as taking over and co-starring alongside Mel Gibson, Danny Huston, Shawn Roberts and Bojana Novakovic. Production began September 18 in Massachusetts.

Plot Concept: Based on Campbell's 1985 BBC miniseries, the story centers on
an operative (Winstone) sent to clean up evidence in the murder of a woman. Gibson plays her detective father, who wants answers after his daughter is shot on his doorstep. The cop unearths his daughter's secret life and discovers a world of corporate cover-ups and government collusion. Huston takes on the role of a shady businessman while Roberts will play the role of the daughter's distraught boyfriend.

Outstanding choice, Ray Winstone. He was excellent in The Proposition and Beowulf, and is a wonderful choice to replace the increasingly one-dimensional De Niro. I realize everyone is down on Mel Gibson, and people are entitled to their opinion, but the man can act, and this movie should be an excellent comeback film.

When I saw 1 comment, I figured it'd be you. :D

In my opinion, this is definitely a move up from De Niro. I've not been pleased with any of his recent work, nor that of Pacino... Want to guess what movie I won't be seeing this weekend? And speaking of new releases, I give Burn After Reading a B-. Somewhat funny, but very uneven.

DeNiro, unfortunately is a has been, all his recent works suck outside of Meet the Parents. This new film with Al comes at least 10 years too late. The movie is getting ripped by most I've heard that saw it. So this is definitely a good sign for Gibson's film. Gibson on the other hand usually has winners under his name.

I'm totally down on seeing a new Mel Gibson movie. I really like Mel as an actor and lets face it, he's an amazing director. I think Winstone is a pretty good choice too. They guy can change his appearance from film to film like nobody's business.

I hope the studio give this film some good promotion, because something tells me that if Edge of Darkness dies at the box office, it will be a while before Gibson is back in front of the camera again. So Wiseguy, I hope you're right and Gibson has another
