It seems that Warner Bros. and the Watchmen only had one weekend to enjoy the coveted 1st place spot and that was a weekend where the other studios chose not to compete theatrical with it. Seven days later, Walt Disney launches their reimagining of the Witch Mountain franchise with Dwayne Johnson leading the cast and the new family adventure finds itself pushing Watchmen down to 2nd place.
With Race to Witch Mountain clocking in at one hour and thirty-nine minutes in length and being PG in rating, parents took full advantage of having a film the whole family could see and flocked to theaters to give the Disney film an estimated $25.0 million in ticket sales its first three days. With the Dwayne Johnson-led adventure coming into 3,187 theaters and those numbers, the film also had the highest average rate of $7,844 per showing across the nation. A great start for Disney kicking off their 70’s franchise once again.
Mountain’s decent performance pushed the Watchmen down to 2nd place in only its second weekend of theatrical distribution. The R-rated film found itself dropping 67% to grab only $18.0 on 3,611 theaters. This comes up to an average of $5,004 per showing with audience members, the third best average of this report. With the first two weekends of domestic distribution in the bag, the Zack Snyder film has pulled in $86.0 million here in the states. If you include last weekend’s $26.6 million in foreign numbers, the comic adaptation has a worldwide gross of $112.6 million. The estimated budget for the production is $150 mil.
By comparison, Snyder’s last film 300 ruled the box office for two reports and pulled in $129.1 million by the end of its second weekend at the box office. The film eventually dropped to 2nd place in its third weekend. As said in previous reports, the two comic adaptations are very different theatrical animals but it should be noted how they stack up against each other.
Likely taking away some of the adult demographics of the Snyder film, Universal Pictures and Rogue Pictures found their horror remake of The Last House on the Left in 3rd place after its first three days at the box office. The film enjoyed an estimated $14.6 million in sales on only 2,401 theaters, which comes up with the second best average rate of $6,105 per showing.  No budget is listed but as with most horror films, it’s likely low. Another profitable business venture for Rogue Pictures.
The same can be said for 20th Century Fox, who continues to pull in steady decent box office numbers with their Liam Neeson-led revenge thriller Taken. In its seventh weekend at the theaters, film dropped only one slot to 4th place with an estimated $6.6 million performance. Already a success story, the thriller has pulled in $126.8 million domestically. If you include the $73.0 million from foreign markets, Fox has a worldwide gross of $199.8 million. They should hit that $200 mark over the next day.
Tyler Perry finally showed signs of fatigue with the film dropping three spots from 2nd to 5th place in its fourth weekend of release. Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes to Jail, which is already his most successful franchise film to date, pulled in another $5.1 million on 2,203 theaters across the nation. The latest numbers has it with a domestic gross of $83.2 million. The film is already $20 mil over Tyler’s previous record holder Madea’s Family Reunion, which pulled in $63.2 million in 2006.
Fox Searchlight continues steady numbers for their Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, which grabbed another $5.0 million over the weekend. After the film’s 18th weekend in theaters, the latest numbers has the domestic gross at $132.6 million. With the film’s foreign gross of $116.9 million, the studio has a worldwide gross of $249.5 million. Incredible numbers for a film costing only $15 mil to produce.
Sony Pictures likewise has their Kevin James comedy continuing to bring in steady box office numbers with their potential franchise starter Paul Blart: Mall Cop. The film is in 7th place this weekend by grabbing another $3.1 million in sales. The film’s ninth weekend performance has its domestic gross at $137.7 million. The film’s budget is listed at only $26 mil.
Following in 8th place is Warner Bros. and New Line’s romantic comedy He’s Just Not That Into You. The film grabbed another $2.9 million in its sixth weekend of box office distribution and now has a domestic gross of $89.0 million. Can it reach the $100 mil mark before getting pulled out of theaters? Perhaps not but it’s going to be close.
And the final two spots goes to Focus’ animated adaptation of Coraline and Fox Searchlight’s comedy Miss March. The Henry Selick 3D animation pulled in another $2.6 million to increase its domestic gross to $69.1 mil while the American Pie-like comedy Miss March debuted in 10th place with only $2.3 million it its first three days.

Well that shouldn't be surprising.

The power of the blue pipi compels you, the power of the blue pipi compels you!  David Hayter should've put that statement in his letter and maybe more people would've listened to him this weekend.

I wanna check out I Love You Man.

I hate that eveyone compares Watchmen to 300.  They are two different movies people.  I don't see everyone comparing Spielbergs new movies to Jaws.

HUUUUUGE drop for Watchmen.  Looks like my prediction of 200 mil in U.S. is going to fall way short.  Too bad, the worst part about that is studios won't give Snyder a free reign to do whatever he wants.  That sucks for all of us since he likes to make the movies we like.  Oh well...

StarlightGuard 3/15/2009 3:29:53 PM

odd that there isn't much demand for overgrown Smurf willies, eh hanso?

For Terry Pratchett fans, I saw that on March 22'nd on the Ion Channel an adaptation of "The Color of Magic" will be showing.

MonsterGuitarz 3/15/2009 4:45:07 PM

Great now their going to remake The Apple Dumpling Gang with Rowdy Roddy Piper and Dane Cook.

hanso 3/15/2009 5:15:05 PM

Yea Starlight, who woulda thought.  I don't think guys took their chics to see Watchmen cause then they'd feel embarrassed by Dr.Manhattan and their chic might start looking elsewhere.

Yo peeps don't worry bout that, it ain't the size of the boat but the motion in the ocean!  At least that's what I tell myself to get by :)

RaithManan 3/15/2009 5:32:13 PM

Well Hobbs, I believe that Snyder is part of the Director's Guild, in which that will keep your hands tied from studios.  Now maybe when he acquires enough money to finance his own studio, perhaps he won't be.  That' why guys like Lucas, Spielberg and Rodriguez are not part of the Guild and have their own studios because so they can have free reign of what they want to do.  Marvel getting control of most of their property titles also helps in terms of cranking out the kind of comic book movie they like to see, though X-Men is still stuck in the grasps of Fox.

I thought about catching Witch Mountain, but I'll catch it another day as I chose to catch The Wrestler, being a wrestling fan myself.  Watchmen is gonna suffer from much of the parenting walkouts after realizing "HEY THIS ISN'T THE TYPE OF MOVIE I EXPECTED FOR ME AND MY KID" and being too intellectually smart for others who simply just doesn't get it.  I already talked about poor ass lazy parenting last week to those who simply never reads ratings and I'm tired of opening that can of worms. Watchmen will have to hope to break atleast $160-$170 mil to break even at this point.

I knew  Watchmen wasn't gonna see Ironman or Dark Knight numbers because of mostly unfamiliarity except to pure comic fans, but with more reported walkouts I been reading, it could ultimately cut the legs of the movie I fear.

RaithManan 3/15/2009 5:37:47 PM

I would comment on what you said about Manhattan Hanso, but I'm not touchin that one......lol

TayDor 3/15/2009 5:40:23 PM

Exactly.  It's not the kind of movie people expect.  It's also the kind of movie that makes you think. The average movie-goer doesn't like to think.  They need everything spoon-fed to them.

wessmith1966 3/15/2009 6:08:55 PM

I'm disappointed in Watchmen's performance, and while I'm sure it'll end up in the black (especially after DVD sales) it's got to be a downer for the studio. I really think it's an excellent adaptation of the source material. I'll definitely be buying the director's cut DVD.

The kids liked Witch Mountain. I was bored to tears and thought The Rock was a little over the top in his performance. The plus...seeing Carla Gugino on the big screen two weeks in a row!

Last House on the Left...A lot of you are probably too young to remember when the video rental craze began. There was a time when if you didn't see a movie on the big screen you didn't see it until it hit the premium channels or was edited for broadcast on network TV. There was nothing like video on demand or Netflix. When the rental craze began, hundreds of movies that never came close to our local theater were suddenly available for rent. My friends and I were really into horror so we went crazy. I remember a marathon night years ago of all the silent night deadly night movies. I remember one movie in particular that caught our eyes because right on the cover it said something like "banned in 27 countries." Well, that got our attention. We read the back of the VHS tape box and there was violence and nudity. Sold! Hey, cut us some slack we were teenage boys! That movie was the original Last House on the Left. Hell, I didn't know who Wes Craven was, but the movie looked like fun. Honestly, it was a shockfest but a pretty crappy movie. The acting was bad, the film quality was bad, the blood looked liked that bad blood for the Hammer horror films; it was bright red! But, we thought it was cool because we watched a movie banned in 27 countries and it was violent as hell. So, my friends and I went to see the remake this weekend. Not only did we have fun taking a stroll down our movie memory lane, but I was surprised that I actually thought it was a good remake superior to the original with strong performances from Tony Goldwyn and Monica Potter. The movie's not going to win any awards, but hopefully with the new Friday the 13th and now Last House on the Left we're through with the onslaught of PG-13 horror remakes. The thing that scared me the most...some parents took their small kids (I'm talking 8-10 year olds) to see this movie.

I look forward to seeing Knowing this weekend, and I've been told that I'm seeing Duplicity on date night. I'll probably have to wait for I love you, man for next weekend.

It's time to start working on our top movies of summer list. Jarrod, are you making it official this year for us to get our top 10 lists together?
