WITCHBLADE Gets Big Screen Treatment

By: Associate News Editor
Date: Monday, May 12, 2008

This is really an update on an older story, which was first announced in December 2005.

Platinum Studios, Top Cow Prods. and Arclight Films will team on a live-action feature adaptation of WITCHBLADE, based on the Top Cow comicbook franchise. Since 1995, the comicbook franchise has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.

The story centers on an ornate jewel-encrusted gauntlet that gives extraordinary powers to the wearer, a specially chosen female from each generation.

It was previously turned into a TV series, which had a short run on TNT.

Arclight's Gary Hamilton and Nigel Odell, Platinum Studios' Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and Steve Squillante of Havenwood Media will produce. Top Cow's Marc Silvestri & Matt Hawkins and Platinum Studios' Rich Marincic and Greenberg Group's Randy Greenberg will executive produce.  No writer or director is yet attached to the project.

The companies are already eyeing a location shoot in Australia.

I am personally not a fan of Television action/sci-fi/horror series of any sort. Rarely are they able to pull off anything interesting or decent with television writers and a limited budget. About the closest we ever saw to good eye candy on any television action series belonged to the many car-chasing, crashing, blow-em up yet still the bad guy climbs out with only a few scratches, entries in the 80's, i.e. A-Team and The Fall Guy.

A story like Witchblade was obviously one of these personal failures. Lately the only decent show to make it on and have success is Heroes, and it is definately not due to eye candy nor originality. The story is excellent. Anywho, I much prefer to see these entries come out on the big screen and leave the small screen for things such as Family Guy, Forensic Files, or perhaps America's Got Talent. Yeah.. fun stuff.

Witchblade movie.. good idea but as azul said, it will more than likely be butchered.

I don't read anything that isn't Marvel or DC so I really don't know much about Withcblade, except that the tv series really sucked. I can only assume that that series was nothing like the comic. So I would definitely check this out if they get around to making it. Just make sure to steer clear of Y.Butler.

I thought the TV series was really good and it would be nice if the freaking thing would come out on DVD but last I heard it was tied up in legal battles with Yancy Butler who wants more money out of it or something like that.

I'm all for a movie but like any comic movie it was to stay true to the comic or you get Angie Lee's "Hulk"

According to dvdpricesearch the release date for the tv series on DVD is 7-29-2008. I thought the tv series was ok, but I had also not read the comic. A movie would be interesting.

I'm surprised they would make this, given how bad the series tanked. I watched the first few episodes of the show and thought it was ok. I never read the series, so I can't say how closely it kept, but just on pure entertainment, it was ok.

I also really liked the TV series. I've never read the comic but the show was dark and complex with an interesting heroine who wasn't a cookie cutter hero type. I especially loved the transition between the two seasons of it. She received the opportunity for a do-over and got to re-live the events from the first season with various changes. I thought that was very creative. I think it got cancelled partially due to the drinking problem Yancy Butler had.

From what I understand is that the TV show did not implode due to a lack of ratings, but the volitile nature of the staring actress. At the time she was a massive alcholic (and could still be as I haven't heard her name in the news recently). However, on one of her binges she was stopped by a police officer for drunk driving and ended up being arrested for both the DD charges and physically assulting the officer.

Give her "the suit" and this will get an "R" or "X" rating.

Never read the comic but loved the series, it was too bad it got canceled, regardless of why. Hopefully the movie will be as good.
