Varietyreports that, after being frozen for years, the comic adaptation Whiteouthas new heat on it. Universal Pictures has picked up the big screen rights toGreg Rucka and Steve Lieber's comic as a starring vehicle for Reese Witherspoon(Sweet Home Alabama).
The south polemurder mystery had originally been optioned back in 1999 for development byColumbia. That studio recently placed the project into turnaround.
ProducerWolfgang Petersen and partner Gail Katz (both of Radiant Productions) carry overfrom the previous deal. Witherspoon's Type A Films shingle is also producing.Radiant exec Susan Stein will co-produce.
Although theproject was initially developed and pitched by screenwriters Jon and ErichHoeber, it appears Universal will be seeking a new writer for the pic.
