Just a few weeks before production was set to begin, The Wolfman's director Mark Romanek has dropped out of the project, reports Variety. The trade says it's because of "creative differences". Universal says the project is still in strong shape and expect a new director to be announced shortly.

Perhaps, this means a new release date other than Feb 13, 2009, the previous day, which might not be a bad thing as it would be going up against Friday the 13th (on a Friday the 13th date) and Pink Panther 2. Anthony Hopkins, Benicio Del Toro and newly cast Emily Blunt are set to lead the project while Rick Baker is still in charge of the updated Werewolf special effects.

Wahoo! I am first.

Say din't this movie get delayed before because Del Torro got hurt. Now we have to wait for a new director. I think this movie is hovering on the edge of movie development hell.

That is never good news when a director drops out because of 'creative differences'.

It seems the studio was pushing for a lot to be done in THEIR way and not the directors....

I usually cringe when I see a director departing over "creative differences," but I'm a bit ambivalent over this departure.

I'm just hoping that the end result looks like a classic gothic horror movie and not another Van Helsing-style CGI orgy.

All these problems, that can't be good for the end results.

"Van Helsing-style CGI orgy."
heh...heh...heh.
hopefully not though, the werewolves looked good enough in Van helsing, I personally hated the transformation sequence myself... that and Dracula was a prettyboy and I hated him too...the same problem with his transformation sequence...too much Morph, too quick. I liked them REEEEAL slow and EXTREMELY painful (and without CGI) like in American werewolf in London.

I thought they had already started filing this like a year ago?? Well, I would like to see them bring in Mark Pellington (The Mothman Prophicies) to direct this. I think he could do a great job. Del Toro is the perfect choice too.

I was looking forward to a really gritty, maybe gory, yet smart Romanek film… I am sure the differences were Universal wants more gore, less story, and plenty of breasts.

goatartist • Jan 30, 2008, 06:26am •
Can we have more story AND more breasts? That way everyone wins!

John Landis or Joe Dante. Neither of these two guys got to direct sequels to either werewolf films they started, and both series fell off the radar and hit rock bottom... hell, I didnt even realize there WAS a Howling VII till I looked them all up on IMDB last night when I was researching Sybil Danning.
Del toro is perfect... Mark Romanek? WHO? yeah... I think this flick needs a slightly higher profile director, so this news might be for the best. It would be a shame to see this movie fall into dev. Hell...

Can you say Brett Ratner? HA! Seriously, you see Rick Baker in the pic up there? That means the wolfin'-out efx are gonna be old school tight.
