Wood Confirms Plot Differences for Two HOBBITS

This isn't exactly breaking news but it is yet another confirmation for what we can expect in regards to the two HOBBIT movies. Elijah Wood talked with MTV today on what we knows about the projects.

"I haven't spoken to [Jackson] directly about it [but] I've e-mailed him, and as far as I know, the two films that they're doing, one will be 'The Hobbit' and another will take place between the 60 years that happened between 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings,'" the once and future Frodo enthused to MTV News, possibly confirming rumors that the second planned film would not be a Part II, but instead a narrative bridge.

And yes, like the other stars of the original PJ films, he would jump on coming back in the sequel when they plan to fill that 60 year gap as Sauron heads back to Mordor. The only issue with his character coming back is Tolkien's notes. The author left massive amounts of notes for what happened to the some primary characters in that gap, characters like members of the White Council, Aragorn (As Thorongil), Rohan & Gondor, Sauron, etc...But young Frodo Baggins wasn't one of them other than the brief bit about what happened with his parents before moving to Bag End. Still, Wood is ready to come back if offered..

"If I’m asked to go back and revisit that character and it makes sense, I would love to. I would absolutely love to,” he said.

“Nothing was really written with Frodo involved in it. That was sort of an ancillary tale outside of ‘Lord of the Rings.’ I can’t imagine that they [Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens] would write great reams of information regarding my character,” he said of necessary invention outside of Tolkien’s established canon. “But if he [Frodo] should show up, it would actually be the perfect way to revisit because it could be small enough that I could go back and have a nice sort of reunion with the memories that I have of the experience.”

Normally I wouldn't like them to screw with the source material for part 2 but I trust Peter Jackson enough to be okay with it. I only wish he was directing it. Will be curious to see who plays Bilbo. I think Ian Holm is too old to play the young Bilbo.

Agree and Agree. Fitting Ian in a 2.5 minute flashback is one thing. Using Ian for a 2.5 hour movie is another. Adjust for human years, Bilbo should be mid 30s or so... I think. Ian is 76. Assuming the film is partially done in flashback, I would prefer two actors.

A movie that takes place between The Hobbit and LOTR is also fitting because Tolkien wrote bundles of back story and material on all the many many characters and setting of Middle Earth. In reality there is most likely enough written material to make 10 movies. I just hope they include his son on the whole deal as he has picked up his fathers stories quit admirably. if they do then we have no worries. I also have faith that PJ and Co. will make damn sure that the new movie is done right.

Oh and Smaug burning Lake Town is going to KICK ALL MIGHTY ASS!!!!

I can't think of a movie I want to see more than The Hobbit, but I hope the other movie (the bridge as they call it) doesn't suck. I'm not sure that's the way to go. Whenever PJ deviated from the source, I always thought the movies faultered.
And yes, I am so looking forward to Smaug, but the spiders will be awesome too.

I say *respectfully* that forget the 'original Tolkien stories' and have a talented writer write Frodo into The Hobbit. Why not even make Elijah Wood Bilbo, I mean they pulled it off on The Patty Duke show!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Frodo was 33 at the tree party in Fellowship (Bilbo 111 (One gross = 144). So Frodo couldn't be in Hobbit but maybe in the second film.

What are the plot difference then?

I think the title is misleading, wrrlykam. They just mean that it's not a two parter, but they are having a second story that will be written fresh after the events of The Hobbit.

I'm really curious as to what story the "bridging" movie will follow. Tolkien did write a lot of bits and pieces of the in-between years, but what concerns me is how Jackson can cobble them together into a cohesive movie plot. What event would become the climax (and thus the defining moment) of the movie? I just can't put my finger on what that would be... and I agree with almostunbiased's comment about what happened when Jackson deviated from the source material, which has me concerned.

I have little doubt that The Hobbit will be done well, and will be well-received by audiences and critics alike. But this second movie will definitely be a risky venture.

I think they can pull off with Ian Holm what they did at the beginning of X-Men 3, where they used sfx to de-age McKellan and Stewart.

As much as I love Lord of the Rings, both books & films, I'm not really keen on the idea of a 'bridging' movie.

And snallygaster hit the head on the real problem: there's no single narrative that can truly drive a story. If you look at the timeline in the Appendices, you've got bits like Sauron openly declaring himself in Mordor (he arrived just after the end of The Hobbit), Balin entering Moria, Gandalf visiting Bilbo now and then, Aragorn hanging out in Lorien, and Gandalf and Aragorn trying to find Gollum.

That's not a lot to go on to achieve a cohesive story.

I'd like to see Ian Holm make an appearance (in a flashforward perhaps), but I don't think he could play Bilbo for the duration of the adventure. The de-aging trick they did in X3 worked well, but I don't think it would be practical to pull off that effect for the entirety of the movie (if the movie follows the book, Bilbo will be in nearly every scene). I also don't think Woods is right for the role either - I believe it would work best with a completely new actor who we've not seen play a Hobbit before.
