Working in the Factory X

Life-sized replicas of Marvel props are the latest collectibles driving fans to really want to be their favorite superheroes

By Andrew Kardon     February 05, 2003

Give Marvel fans their props. No, really. With their Green Lantern batteries and realistic Batarangs, DC fans have been looking down on their Marvel buddies for years now. But thanks to a little company in Collegeville, Penn., Marvel fans can finally fight back.

Recognizing a desire for unique, high-end collectibles, Factory X kicked off its Marvel Universe Collection in late 2001. This new line of 1-to-1 scale prop replicas hopes to bring pieces of the Marvel Universe straight into your living room. The Thunder God was first out of the gate, with Factory X's Mjolnir: The Hammer of Thor. Weighing roughly 10 pounds and resting on a museum-style display stand, Thor's hammer even features the fabled inscription upon its head. Add in the fact that it's limited to a run of just 1,500 pieces and it's no wonder this bad boy quickly sold out.

"We started Factory X because we are all collectors and we just felt there was a lot of room in the market for cool high-quality products," says Factory X President Timothy Wenhold. "In other words, we wanted to create collectibles that we ourselves would want to buy."
