Update: HR's Heat Vision has confirmed yesterday's report that Worthington is circling Alex Proyas' origin tale of Dracula. Check out the original story below.

Sam Worthington is certainly sinking his teeth into some major genre properties this past year. And he may biting down onto yet another well known character. Latino Review reports the man who played half a machine in Terminator Salvation, a paraplegic marine in Avatar, and will soon be the mortal son of the god Zeus in Clash of the Titans is currently the front runner to star in Dracula Year Zero

Alex Proyas (Dark City, I, Robot) is helming the Universal Pictures production from a screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

Plot Concept: The story is an origin tale of Vlad the Impaler, the Romanian royal who inspired Bram Stoker's vampire tale. It centers on how Vlad became the creature; the choices that he made to make him into the tragic character.

What do you Maniacs think? Can Sam pull off Vlad?

Am I the only one who thinks this guy is just not this good?  He's the next Keanu Reeves...acts the same in absolutely everything, yet inexplicably gets into all the big budget cool movies that I want to see despite him.

Yes! Oh God Yes! Please! Give us more sexy movies about sexy vampires and sexy dracula, sexily portayed by sexy men, sporting sexy accents from sexy Australia.

Got nothing really against Australia or Australians, but come on... Sam's got a problem masking his "sexy" accent . (must drive a director to drink having to spend as much time in ADR as shooting his scenes)

This is going to come off as Dracula Dundee. Hey, that coould actually be comedic genius!

Lack of cast directors actually doing some homework and find diamonds in the rough. So easy to grab a hot actor and make a film around him. If thats the case I'd rather see Brad Pitt as Vlad.

What a lousy title for a movie.

The story idea has potential. A movie devoted just to Dracula's beginnings hasn't been done to my knowldge.

I do have to agree though that Worthington is picking up lots of work for an actor who isn't that interesting, IMHO. He's alright. but in Terminator:S and Avatar he doesn't come across as that emotive. He just seems to be the flavor of the month.

I agree with Monkeyfoot in that the story idea has a lot of potiential. But there has been a Dracula or a Vlad the Impaler movie done before a few years ago, although I forget the name of it at the moment but it starred the actor who played Dracula in a Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode back in 2000. Anyway, director Alex Proyas is behind this so it should have a chance to be good, hopefully good as in Dark City or The Crow and not average like I,Robot.

So far, yes, he hasn't really shown much in the way of acting skills, but factor in that his director for Terminator was McG (not good at directing actors IMHO) and in Avatar he had Cameron who I think was a little more concerned with his new tech than getting good performances from his talent.  Maybe he can act if given a good "acting" director.  I like Proyas for this type of film, but he still might not be the director to get a good performance from Sam.

I think I'd rather see Sam take on a role like Mad Max in the rumored remakes.

I was thinking this guy would be better for Fright Night as the lead vamp... or Gerald Butler.

SarcasticCaveman, did you just compare Worthington to Keanu Reeves? Dude I just saw Point Break the other day, liked the movie, but Reeves was so bad I threw things at the screen on reflex. Didn't even realize I was doing it. Wothington may have a long way to go and I'll agree with you on that but he is leaps and bounds better than Reeves.

axia777 1/26/2010 8:00:01 AM

If Alen Proyas is directing then that is all I have to know.  This movie will kick ass like pretty much everything the man has ever done.  He will get the performace he wants out of Worthington in Worthingtin wants to or not.
