Worthington Leads TERMINATOR Trilogy

Apparently, director James Cameron is definitely on board the upcoming Terminator Salvation trilogy. Enough so that he is on the phone with current helmer McG, giving advice on casting choices. Variety reports Cameron suggested his Avatar (slated 2009) star Sam Worthington a worthy choice for the rumored new major role in the trilogy. Director McG promptly brought the Australian actor on board.

Variety also went on to recall the tensions between Cameron and T3:

Cameron never took a public position on the Jonathan Mostow-directed "T3," which grossed more than $430 million worldwide. Speculation is his history with some of the producers could have prompted him to stay on the sidelines.

"T3" was owned by Mario Kassar and Andy Vajna, who years ago bought the rights at a Carolco bankruptcy auction out from under Cameron, prompting the director to remove himself from involvement. And the "T3" rights package included a multimillion-dollar rights buyout and exec producer credit for Gale Anne Hurd, Cameron's former partner and ex-wife. He famously signed over his "Terminator" rights for $1 to her before they made the first film, in exchange for a guarantee he wouldn't be replaced as director. It was a deal that left him on the outside looking in as everyone else cashed in on "T3."

The slate is clean after Halcyon Co. bought out all franchise rights from Kassar and Vajna and set the new film for domestic distribution at Warner Bros. for summer 2009.

Sources said McG spoke on the phone recently with Cameron, who is in New Zealand working on "Avatar." It was during that chat that he recommended Worthington, who in "Avatar" plays a paraplegic war veteran from Earth who's brought to another planet inhabited by a race of humanoids at odds with Earth's inhabitants.

Plot Concept: While the "Terminator Salvation" plot has twists and turns that are being kept under tight wraps, Worthington will play the role of Marcus, a central figure in a three-picture arc that begins after Skynet has destroyed much of humanity in a nuclear holocaust. A group of survivors led by John Connor (Christian Bale) struggles to keep the machines from finishing the job.

Right on, just knowing that Cameron might have a little say or some good advice as to how too approach this gives me confidence in this project, the fact that McG decided to get a hold of Cameron in the first place means he wants to get this done right...Let's just hope he does not Charley Angels this one up...

Well, being that Cameron gets the profits from a little movie called "Titanic", my heart is not excatly bleeding for him on the loss of profits from T3.....I loved T3,,,,,I really loved the ending and how it changed everything,,,,I am glad to see Cameron giving his input on his, and he seems to have no probelm with McG, that is a good sign,,,,,I mean, remember, Cameron's first fil was Pirrhana II: The Spawning, so even the best filmmakers sometimes start out rough.

I feel like that stupid sarah connor garbage tarnished this whole series, especially after T3, which although being reasonably cool, took it to the "this trilogy is pretty much done for like the governator's acting career" place. Some stupid fox sitcom just killed it for me. This new trilogy has got to be something completely new and refreshing, and although i know that's exactly what they're going for, after movies like matrix revolutions (reasonably entertaining), I cant see them knockin my sox off, let alone getting me in the theatre.

You idoit GoatArtist !
The Fox Show ties in T2 - into T3. If you pay any attention. It's not going to mess with the new Terminator movies one bit. Sarah will die at some point and leave John to fend for himself and later leader of the human race against Skynet.

The show's freakin awesome esp last episode with the introduction of Kyle Reese's Brother. Thats kick butt. Esp when they first showed him in the dark green overcoat like how KYLE REESE had on in the original Terminator Movie.

So Sam Worthington gets a starring role in two massive sci-fi epics. If this guy doesn't shoot himself into superstardom as a result, either he is a bumbling idiot or there is something wrong with the universe. He should include James Cameron in any thank-you speech he ever delivers for the rest of his life.

While Cameron may not have officially blessed T3, he did say nice things about the movie in public. More so than he did about *ahem* AVP...

I'd be excited for this new film series except for McG. I don't know, maybe if there's somebody really looking over his shoulder and making sure he doesn't go overboard with silliness.

Dallas -

IMO, T3 was completely erased by SCC. The movie takes places in the 03-04 timeframe. When Sarah, John and Cameron jumped forward in time, they skipped over all of the events that would have occurred to cause T3.

The creators of the SCC have gone on record saying that T3 did not happen in their "universe" and has no baring on their series. Basically it's like it was never made/never existed.

I was not all that impressed with T3, but this

to most movies when they become too

successfull when they producing, writing,

and the direction go wrong . Either I think

it's big risk for this next installment in the

series, with probably at least mixed reactions

about the chronicles. There proabably a

more sophisticated type of cybrog than

the T-X. I can't imagine how time travel

would be possible since more time has

passed. I am not sure how many more times

they'll keep replacing an actor for the role

of John Connor. It would be interesting to

see the war in the future would like in the

next one. This probably will make less money

than T3 despite what might happen in this

one. After all there is no Arnold involved

because he's so busy running the state of

California. I hope it's a lot different than the

chronicles.
