The first anime I saw was Marine Boy, my mother hated it as it was 'so violent' LOL. My next exposure came with a shedload of vhs videos at my local video rental store, from early ADV and manga videos like most folk.

It seem that one source says built on Earth and other in orbit. So much for hard and fast canon. You see a lot of that in Trek. Unless it appears on screen it is not canon and subject to change. The Earth thing came from a plaque that was made for on the wall but never used IIRC.
