Mania Box Office Report: SMAUG the Magnificent

Madea the Terrible

It was a magnificent dragon wasn't it? Well the rest of the world thought so too and Peter Jackson’s follow up to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was the number one movie this weekend. Not only did Smaug decimate the competition, he demolished it. Grant it Smaug’s biggest competitor was a Tyler Perry Christmas Movie, 12 days before Christmas mind you, but Smaug took in over 3 times what Frozen did too.

Ray Suber of Box Office Mojo had this to report: “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug had a mighty debut this weekend, though it still fell noticeably short of its predecessor. Meanwhile, A Madea Christmas set a new low among Tyler Perry's Madea movies.

Smaug banked an estimated $73.7 million, which ranks fourth all-time in the month of December. Unfortunately, it's off 13 percent from last year's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which set the December record with $84.6 million. It's also lower than I Am Legend ($77.2 million) and Avatar ($77 million)”.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Frozen (2013)

Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Thor: The Dark World

Out of the Furnace

Delivery Man

The Book Thief

This week The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is bound to repeat its victory. The only film really standing in Smaug’s way is Anchorman 2. Can it live up to the hype and the fans expectations?

But how was Hobbit 2 internationally and total that.  I don't think there are any problems with third coming out.  It would probably come out even if it was half that.

This movie will score big internationally. No big deal on domestic gross.

And yes Smaug was magnificent. He would make Vermathrax her bitch. :)

Wiseguy 12/16/2013 5:51:32 AM

LOL ElBaz except you'd be wrong. Vermithrax Pejorative is the dragon of all dragons even 30 years plus later

Oh snap look at THOR about to pass 200 mill. domestically. I'm putting a big pot of dry crow for all you know who you are

And oh snap it's starting to look like IM3 won't be dethroned as the biggest domestic film of the year, not to mention the biggest film of the year PERIOD. Guess I'll start getting ready that second pot of dry crow for those naysayers, because it's very unlikely that Catching Fire has another 53 million left in it.

And I know those naysayers ain't Marvel fans, at least not true Marvel fans, right? ;)

Yeah yeah...I didn't think Thor would hit 200 million domestic.

Yeah yeah...I thought Catching Fire would be numero uno by the end of the year.

(munch, munch, eating crow...)

Too busy Xmas shopping and just too damn cold this weekend so I didn't see Bilbo vs. the Smaug Monster. I'll have to catch it next weekend.

Wise, I'm very pleased IM3 is the biggest hombre at the B.O. this year. The movie's Mandarin would take many bows for his performance.

But as a Marvel fan, I'm happy to see these results. 200 million domestic for Thor and Iron Man being the number 1 film of the year is bragging material for the studio.

More results like that and they take more gambles on other Marvel related projects.

With all of the festivities going on, I'm sure that many couldn't squeeze in Smaug this past weekend, which should give it some staying power over the holidays.

Will Ferrel has done the most for promoting his movie in the history of cinema.  He is freaking everywhere at the same time.  He looks like he is having the time of his life doing it to.

Didn't get to see the Hobbit DoS this weekend either.  But I did score a win by convincing my wife to watch the first one with me in preparation for seeing Hobbit DoS together next weekend.  Anyone see it in HFR?

ElBaz13 12/16/2013 7:57:51 AM

Good one ddiaz.

I too convinved my wife to watch the Hobbit Extended last week. She was alright with it but said she would wait until I get the blu-ray of DoS to see it.  She also thought Thorin was a pretty sexy dwarf. LOL!
