WWPhilly: Marvel Secret Invasion Panel

The room was crowded. As Joe Quesada approached the podeum we were all instructed to put on our Skrull masks. If you have been out of the loop, haven’t been to a Comic Con this year yet or (heaven forbid) don’t read Marvel Comics, those pesky shape shifting aliens are back and already manuvering to take over the Marvel Universe.

In a calculated move since New Avengers #1, Brian Michael Bendis has been seeding the Marvel Universe with secret Skrull agents. All on different teams, groups and solo acts the Skrulls have infiltrated the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D. and even Daredevil, forcing all of us to ask, “Who do you trust?”

This is Marvel’s big event for the year, much like House of M and Civil War, Secret Invasion will wreck havoc across all their titles (well those in the 616 Universe). The following is credible information on what will transpire in the next few months of Secret Invasion:

Tom Brevoort holding up a copy of Secret Invasion #3

To start, Secret Invasion #3 will ship on time according to the E.I.C. He addressed the issue immediately, dispelling the internet rumors and then had Tom Brevoort hold up a copy.

Now with all big event comics there always inevitable spin off books and cross over titles. If you have been reading Secret Invasion you know you have to read the Avengers to follow along.

Marvel revealed many of these books for the rest of the year:

Secret Invasion: Thor will be done by Matt Fraction.

Secret Invasion: Inhumans will begin in August and deal with the ramifications of Black Bolt being replaced by a Skrull.

Mighty Avengers #17 will reveal the Skrull Electra back story.
There will be a directors cut of Secret Invasion #1.

Nova and the She-Hulk bookswill feature stories with the original Super Skrull (K'lrt).

The New Avengers will feature a Scarlet Witch story that will expose exactly how the Skrulls were involved with House of M.

Secret Invasion: Spider-Man will flush out many of the questions about Spider-Man and his role in the Avengers since Brand New Day.

Skrull Dark Phoenix

Joe Quesada and the panel of Marvel writers were able to reveal the following about heroes, villians and lingering questions:
Ms. Marvel will be the only hero on the ground when the Skrulls do invade.
Nick Fury will be back in a big way.

Dan Slott (currently writing the Amazing Spider-Man) stated that there will be two different types of Skrulls. He likened them to the two different types of Klingons in the Star Trek universe.

When asked if whether or not the Jean Grey/ Dark Phoenix emerging from the Skrull ship was the real deal Quesada got really quiet and gave a look to the crowd that indiacted, yes (at this point though, who can you trust?).

The Red Hulk and the Hulk storyline will not play a part in Secret Invasion.

Jessica Drew may reappear in a long awaited Spider-Woman book written by Brian Michael Bendis after Secret Invasion.

Incredible Hercules will go off on his own quest, sent by Athena, to vanguish the Skrull gods.

They refused to answer the numerous questions about whether or not Hawkeye/ Ronin and Mockingbird are Skrulls.

They closed the panel stating that the ulitmate goal for the end of Secret Invasion (scheduled for November) was complete and utter anarchy in the Marvel Universe. Quesada also wanted to let us know that the best part of Secret Invasion, for him, was that nobody at Marvel knew Bendis was seeding this story way back in New Avengers #1.

And it has been well done, the main story and the way the accompanying books are filling in some answers. I'm excited and nervous as to what they have in store for us. Hopefully it won't be something that leaves so many people crying ala BND, which I'm enjoying quite a bit. The fact that Bendis was planning this so long obviously means there's no one off limits, good reason to go back and do a double take on some questionable stuff over the last 2-3 years. Like for example, you know, nevermind I don't want to ruin it for anyone.

I was sooooooooooo hoping the red Hulk story would fit in with the SI storyline but, once again the Hulk gets taken out of something so big and cool, huge bummer.

- Great, another resurection of Jean Grey for the 34526345763473665873th time....who cares.

- Nick Fury is back, recocgnize y'all, oh yeaaaaaah!!!

It's really cool and I do believe it that Bendis has been planning this from the start of New Avengers # 1. this story is fun to read and can't wait to see the whole storyline of everything.

The running joke back when I worked in a comic shop in the early 90s: "Hello X-mansion? Jean Grey? No, I'm sorry, she died a month ago. But if you'll call back next week..."

I usually don't pick up tie-ins but since I collect new and mighty avengers I read those and they were pretty good so I decided to pick up the FF tie-in...That was a pretty cool read and I really could care less for FF. I might check out the Captain Brit and Ms Marvel while I'm at it.
