Guy Ritchie has done a brilliantly excellent job with the Sherlock Holmes movie. I think he's a good choice to helm this project.

The future of the Xerxes film looks to be changing a bit as it appears that via Vulture, Warner Bros. is offering the directing duties on the film to Guy Ritchie. Xerxes is the adaptation of the Frank Miller graphic novel that's in the works which will deal with the same world as 300. Vulture has a few theories about why this is happening but it has a fair bit of conflict to it as well. First, they cite that Warner Bros. wants Snyder to focus solely on the new Superman film since it apparently has major third-act problems and there's the looming issue of ensuring a movie hits in 2012 due to the potential rights loss that would happen. The other theory they espouse is that because Snyder's last two films underperformed (Watchmen and Legend of the Guardians) and the apparently poor testing Sucker Punch has received means they're not happy with what Snyder can do. Yet if that's true, having him on Superman seems like a real conflict since that is one of their most valuable franchises they need to get back into proper order. If you have no faith in the director with three films in a row that have not done well, would they have given him Superman?
The Vulture piece has a few things wrong which make some of this suspect after all, such as listing both Siegel and Shuster as Superman's writers and that it all started in Detective Comics.
Frank Miller had this to say about the graphic novel's concept back in December. “The story will be the same heft as ’300′ but it cover a much, much greater span of time – it’s 10 years, not three days, This is a more complex story. The story is so much larger. The Spartans in ’300′ were being enclosed by the page as the world got smaller. This story has truly vast subjects. The Athenian naval fleet, for instance, is a massive artistic undertaking and it dwarfed by the Persian fleet, which is also shown in this story. The story has elements of espionage, too, and it’s a sweeping tale with gods and warriors.”

I hope this is bullshit, I want Snyder to direct Xerxes but at the same time I thought I read that it's only going to be loosely based on the comic and not as loyal as 300 was to the source (comic book). I was under the impression that Snyder had actually began work on the script
Anyway I like Ritchie's films well maybe not his Sherlock Holmes film but the others are pretty good, mostly.
And if there's a problem with the third act isn't that Goyer and Nolan who are to blame?
I really like 300. But I am not interested at all in a Xerxes movie. Especially since the reason 300 was so successful was due to Snyders style when it comes to film making.
"Legend of the Guardians" was great. I didn't care for "Watchmen." I agree with Wiseguy, if there is a problem with the third act, the blame would have to go to Goyer and Nolan. I imagine they will straighten out any problems that may exist. I have no interest in "Xerxes," but if Guy Ritchie is connected to it, I'm sure it will be good. I enjoyed "Sherlock Holmes" quite a bit and his earlier movies are good as well.
That's the thing about Hollywood, you have a few underperforming movies and you are no longer an A list director...but it's always been that way. He does need a hit and I've read more than one place that Sucker Punch isn't that good.
As far as problems with a 3rd act for Superman...3rd acts are easy to fix. The 2nd act is where most movies get flushed down the toilet.
I'm okay with Guy Richie directing but I want to know if the graphic novel is any good. Snyder nailed the graphic novel by Miller down and one of the reasons why it was so good in my opinion. The fear with new directors is how much they want to change the source material.
I love such blatant contradictions in any article. I will point out that Watchmen didn't fail because Zack Snyder did a poor job directing it; in fact, he did the best he could do with it considering the material is so vast (check out the Ultimate Cut of the movie, if you haven't already, if you want a better Watchmen movie experience). Watchmen failed because it was difficult to adapt.
@wise- 300 was comic book based on frank millar's comic but to my knkowledge there isn't even a comic for this spin off of a movie. There is no material. If they played it smart they should have the same guy who was xerxes in 300 as the title role.
Yeah Calibur the Xerxes comic book mini is being put together now by Miller. I believe it should be out later this year. And Snyder has been in on it as far as what it entails
With Guy Ritchie as the director, you might as well flush a hundred million down the toilet
Guy Ritchie on Xerxes??????? i dont see it at all. If its going to feel like 300, that means its going to be epic and it's all shot on Green Screen with a lot of Visual Effects. He doesnt have that kind of experience and that is defnitiely not his visual style.
I mean he could pleasantly surprise me, but why not approach directors from the Spartacus:Blood and Sand series that have experience with a similar style?
