After spending 10 years in development hell, Fox and Chris Carter are kicking this production into overdrive. Just last week, they announced a December 10 production start date. The Hollywood Reporter has now announced that Fox has set a release date, reporting that the long awaited X-FILES 2 will hit theaters on July 25, 2008. Frank Spotnitz and Chris Carter developed the script while series creator Carter will get behind the camera in directing David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. The storyline is being reported as a supernatural thriller.

Plot Concept:  All that is being revealed is that it is a "supernatural thriller" and that the movie will take the complicated relationship between FBI agents Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Anderson) in unexpected directions as Mulder continues on his quest for the truth and Scully remains inextricably tied to her partner's pursuits.

X-FILES 2 hits theaters everywhere July 25, 2008.

Maybe they can spend the first twenty minutes of the movie trying to show the viewers why they should care about a sequel? Something tells me that this one will either wind up in dev hell again, or going direct to dvd.

I see the opening shot already. There is sand in the desert near blasted ruins which begins to stir in a wholly unholy, unnatural way and it swirls and bulges and forms into the shape of - a man! A CIGARETTE SMOKING SAND MAN! Or maybe they could just go with Duchovny in a Speedo fighting aliens or something...

OK let the bashing commence, but you know you all want to see this movie. Fox will put big guns behind this movie (sorry daforce, it will not go straight to DVD) and I for one am looking forward to it. Who's WITH ME!! The X-Files is one of the greatest sci-fi TV series of all time. There are plenty of great stories to tell, even if, and I'm sure some people will agree with me, the series ended with a bit of ambiguity. Bring on the black oil! (and steal it back from Heroes)

I just hope they don't play it commercially safe by focussing on action and explosions that have never played to the strongest elements of The X-Files, which have always been dramatic and atmosphere-oriented. While I hope they keep the baby talk to a minimum (that baby was the worst thing to happen to the show), X-Files has generally been beyond all sci fi (even the great Battlestar Galactica) in writing romantic dialogue and achieving subtle, touching moments between Scully and Mulder. The dialogue has to be sharp and not formulaic, but the show, above all, has to reinvent itself by focussing on new themes. It can't be another instance of Scully considering a different career choice or Mulder just feeling guilty about Scully cooperating in his quest. It can't just be about faith versus science that pits Scully conveniently against Mulder alone. It can't just be about paranoia or evil. It can have all those elements, but we need something new and more dramatically realistic than these well-worn themes explored in 7 years of them working together. Furthermore, the suspicion of government found in the show of which I was always sceptical as a teen now seems well-founded. It's the right time for the X-Files to be subtly political in a way only the X-Files can. In the past, they've referenced the attrocities of Vietnam, the mistreatment of Vietnam veterans, the attrocities carried out by war criminals in WWII that went unpunished by the US government in return for scientific expertise, the mistreatment of Mexican immigrants, anti-Jewishness, the disgusting US-established School of the Americas (where Latin American soldiers supporting brutal right-wing regimes were trained by the American government to kill supposed Soviet-allied left-wing movements). Indeed, Western, especially US, governments throw around the words "Al Qaeda" and "terrorism" the same way "Communist" was used to excuse any terribe behavior on their part during the Cold War. Now is the time, or perhaps in a future X-Files film, to touch on the suffering of Muslim peoples and the folly of the war on terror, including hypocritical treatment of the Muslim world. It's important to do this. Also, a Krychek-centered movie would be cool... :)

Even though they wer killed off in Jump the Shark, bring back the Lone Gunmen if this is a stand-alone movie not attached to the first movie, the mythology, or other TV episodes.

Naturally they find out that aliens are responsible for these foolish extremist groups and proceed to eliminate each member one by one until they come to the supreme leader, Ron Paul. And then they take him out too. The world rejoices. The end.

Glad I picked up all 9 seasons for $15 each. I can go back and watch them in time for the release of the new movie

They don't need to spend anytime explaining why I should care because I already do. I want more X-Files, they don't need to be a continuing storyline from the first movie or the shows. They can keep on making stand alone movies for as long as they want. There definitely isn't a shortage of possibilities. Muldfeld, maybe they should spend time showing how the muslim world treats their own, how in some places they kill you for converting, how in some of these countries non-muslims are not allowed to publicly express or observe their religion, how they teach hatred to their kids(even before the war on terror), how their own prophet approved of spreading islam through the sword, how the same prophet advocated killing in the name of islam, why the same prophet had a 9 year old wife, why so many muslim countries rule by dictatorship, why in so many places once the muslim population is large enough trouble always follows and why the so called moderates don't stand up for peace and always succumb to the radicals. Keep in mind that the rights they deny non-muslims in their countries are freely given to them here and the minute they don't get their way all hell breaks loose. Wait a few more years when the muslim population reaches about 10 to 15 percent...T R O U B L E. See France, Germany, U.K. and Belgium for some examples.

daforce, Just what time frame is an acceptable window between sequels? Terminator 2 came out 7 years after the original, as did Aliens. I am excited for XF2, but I do wish they would somehow continue the mythology as opposed to doing a stand-alone creature feature. As much as I loved Krycek as a villain I do not want him back, and the same goes for the Lone Gunmen. Let the dead rest and move forward. No one's pining for Deep Throat or X to come back, are they?

Took them 10 years for a sequel, and now they are going to rush the movie. What's the point in rushing? Are they afraid that people might stop caring about X-Files if it takes them another year!? Plus they think this is a summertime movie? They are screwed. It should be released in late August like all the summer reject movies are.
