While I agree the action plot is a bit dull and unexciting in places, the relationship hasn't felt so fresh since Season 4 or 5! The writers stayed away from the cliches and formulas that really hurt the series in Season 6 onward. The dialogue between Mulder and Scully feels honest and vital and real. Gone are the forced ways Mulder would speak about "the truth". Scully doesn't even formulaically devote herself to Mulder's quest again. The movie is really about their relationship and that larger aspect is done beautifully. They didn't try to pander like J.J. Abrams with lots of shock and awe but with a forced dramatic moment or two. The drama is center stage. Also, the moral complexity is there with the priest. It's some really admirable stuff, and it's the best stand alone story since Season 6. I enjoyed this more than the first film, which really failed in its efforts to give the mythology its due by completely avoiding Krychek, proper dialogue with CSM or any of the long-term, mysterious relationships that made the mythology so great. Not a great suspense plot, but the Mulder and Scully drama is beautiful and innovative and better than anything in the last 4 years of the show, save "Sein Und Zeit"/"Closure".
