After nine years, some of which were the most brilliant ever seen in the run of any drama on television, THE X-FILES will be calling it quits this May. In a report carried in THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, Chris Carter has decided to end the series this spring.
"I look at it as the ninth-inning situation," Carter told THE REPORTER. "I'd rather go out now and celebrate rather than have to make an announcement in the summer... I want to be able to wrap things up for the fans who have been there from the beginning and throughout. My determination was to go out with a series of very, very strong episodes that are going to pull a lot of threads together from the last nine years."
Ratings have been falling for several years, and with original star David Duchovny having left the series at the end of last year, there was little left for fans of the old Mulder/Scully magic.
So long. We salute you, X-FILES. It's been a great run.
