What They Say
Months ago, when Kimihiro Watanuki became the indentured servant of the witch Yuko Ichihara, Yuko warned Kimihiro about his attraction to cute young Himawari-chan. But he refused to listen. How could his pretty classmate possibly pose any kind of danger to him? At last the secret is revealed... with near-fatal results.

The Review

It took ten volumes, but we finally learn Himawari's secret. I must say it isn't what I expected. I really thought Himawari was non-human and needed something from Watanuki. I also thought things might be taking so long to develop because 'Evil' Himawari couldn't out duel Domeki in a fight for control of Watanuki. Boy was I wrong. Himawari is just a human, albeit not a normal human. If she was, she wouldn't be in this CLAMP series now would she? I'm not going to reveal Himawari's secret here, and although I hope people will discuss it in the forum thread I also hope they will remember to use the spoiler tags. Thanks!

With that said, this is definitely one of my favorite volumes so far. With as strange as all the xxxHolic characters are, Himawari was always normal on the outside with an expectant air of mystery about her. And yes, ten volumes to learn her secret does seem somewhat over played. Then again, Himawari's revelation probably wouldn't be as satisfying if it had taken place after only five or so volumes. Another aspect of this volume that I find highly endearing is Watanuki admitting his love for Himawari. This is freaking awesome. Think about it, how many other series have you read where the protagonist never admits his/her true feelings? For me, Watanuki saying "I love you" is a nice change. All right, I'm done be sappy.

I can't really say much more about this volume without ruining it for anyone that hasn't read it yet so I'll end here. Oh yeah, major Yuko swimsuit fanservice in the color pages at the beginning of this volume.
