All right, the headline's exaggerating the book's one girl-on-girl scene a bit much, but there is a scene with two women kissing (you'll have to read it to find out which ones), but in world with only two men (Yorrick and the astronauts' baby), I don't suppose it's really that much of a stretch. But, it's still rules.
But enough with the lesbiantics! This is another top-notch issue in one of the best series being published right now. If you aren't reading Y: THE LAST MAN, stop reading this right now, pick up something heavy, and drop it on your foot. Done? Good. You deserved every painful second of that.
As usual, Brian K. Vaughan's dialogue crackles and the bright, clean art fits his writing perfectly. This month, Goran Suduka provides the penciles instead of series regular Pia Guerra. But, their pencil-work is so similar as to create no disruption in visual continuity. In this issue, Yorrick, Agent 355, and Dr. Mann catch a shipping vessel headed to Yokogata, Japan in pursuit of the mysterious ninja that kidnapped Yorrick's pet monkey, Ampersand. As we found out a few issues ago, the monkey's, err...waste...may hold the cure that would prevent any future men from dying (Yorrick'll have to get cracking then, if there are to be any). Unfortunately for our intrepid trio, there's a spy aboard the ship that rats them out to a foreign power quite interested in the last man. During the course of the journey, Yorrick is discovered and introduced to the ship's captain (who offers the crew's services) and hot chicks make out. All right, I realize I keep harping on that, but I'll put it a little more delicately: an unspoken romantic tension that's been building for several issues is finally broken between two of the characters and it's handled far more tastefully than I've made it sound. That's really what happens.
I really can't say enough good things about Y: THE LAST MAN. When people ask me what my favorite comic is or what they should read, I usually tell them this one. There are a lot of great books coming out right now, but this one continues the fine Vertigo tradition. If you read this title already, keep reading it. If you haven't picked it up yet, you're missing out. You can afford to not read X-UBERANT X-MEN or whatever and grab this instead. It's also regularly collected in trade paperbacks, so no jibba jabba, fool!
