Saldana for Guardians of the Galaxy?

From Trek to the Marvel U

First it was Avatar, then Star Trek, now Zoe Saldana might be adding the Marvel Cinematic Universe to her resume. The Hollywood Reporter broke the story yesterday that “Saldana would play Gamora, the green-skinned humanoid who is the last of a species that was exterminated by a race known as the Badoon. She also happens to be a skilled assassin”.

If this pans out, Saldana would join Chris Pratt (who is playing Starr-Lord) and Dave Bautista (playing Drax) in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The casting of Groot (a giant tree-man), Rocket Raccoon, and the film’s villain, Thanos, have yet to be announced.

The Brief Synopsis: Guardians of the Galaxy centers on Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Pratt), a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone want.

Who is Gamora? According to the Marvel.com: “Thanos discovered the infant Gamora after the Zen-Whoberi race had been demolished by the Universal Church of Truth. Thanos used the machines aboard his ship, Sanctuary II, to bring Gamora back in time by two decades and bring her body to peak perfection. He also altered Gamora's perceptions, so that she would not see how evil he was. Thanos sent Gamora into the Universal Church Of Truth, hoping she would cause chaos and also assassinate the Church's leader, the Magus. Gamora then aided Adam Warlock against the Magus, leading to the Magus' defeat”. Read the rest of her biography here on Marvel.com.

So Zoe is now our new Summer Glau?  I'm down for that.  But I do hope they have her bulk up a bit for the role.  In her current "have to wear a floatie around my waist so I don't slip down the shower drain" state, I don't think she'd be as beleivable.

Me....not sure about that. She is like beyond skinny and does not portray the tought, deadliest assasin in the galaxy IMO...she needs to eat a few double cheese hamberger with extra bacon in order to look the part.

Don't doubt her acting skill...just the look and feel of the original character will not be well represented with her unless she bulks a crap load of muscles and weight.

I've said the same thing on two other sites jedibanner.  She doesn't strike me as the most dangerous woman in the galaxy which Gamora is often reffered to as.  I'm sure she can do it justice, but size wise and look wise, I'd rather see a woman like Paula Patton in this role.

What's that girl name from Hardwire...she looks the part and acts the part mostly...this one...nah...

Yeah not my top choice either but I think I can work with it.

Agree jedi, Gina Carano might have been a better choice

I've been impressed with Marvel so far, but I'm in "wait and see" mode for a GOTG movie.  Of all the cool characters to make a film about...I would have put the Micronauts before GOTG.  But, we shall see (wonder what kind of cameo Stan Lee will make in outer space?)   I'd REALLY much rather seen a Inhumans film.

With Iron Man winding down (I assume with an aging Downey and his last stint as IM is presumably A2) they really need some more interesting leads in characters like Black Panther, Dr. Strange, Daredevil, Vison and Scarlet Witch (Hank Pym will be making his film in two years), and Luke Cage/Iron Fist.  I was never really a fan of Marvel's outer space heroes.  I liked the grounded "everyman" types.   I think, despite the praise of the Avengers, they missed the mark with Hawkeye and Black Widow.  I LOVED Hawkeye in the comics...the movie version is let down.

Too bad that their studios don't have the rights to Spidey, X-Men and Fantastic Four.

Gina Carano would be a better choice. Saldana is beautiful, but physically doesn't fit the role.

I don't think Marvel should include The Guardians of the Galaxy. It just convolutes everything. I don't want the possibility of Robert Downey, Jr. standing next to Rocket Raccoon in the future. It would trivialize the progress of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The average movie goer is not a hard core fan of comic book-style lore.

I'd prefer the Guardians... from the 1990's. I enjoyed that run. I didn't see any raccoons. But altogether, I think it's a bad idea. Everyone wants to do their own derivative space opera. It isn't exciting anymore.

Thanos is fine. Galactus, sure. But I think Marvel has more than enough stories to tell right here on earth.

I think there should be an interstudio agreement to have at least Spider-Man and Wolverine appear in Avengers 2.

i agree on Gina Carano for Gamora. I see Saldana as Nikki Gold from Mercury.

ElBaz13 4/4/2013 9:43:52 AM

I like this choice. Sure she doesn't "look" the part but she has way better acting chops than Gina Carano.

She's a decent actress and can kick butt. James Gunn is no doubt looking for a solid compliment to Chris Pratt since Bautista will probably not have many words of dialogue. Think about it. he has a team of 5. Had he chosen Gina Carano, it would have been Chris Spratt plus one wrestler plus one MMA plus a mo-cap actors (or tennis balls as reference). Spratt needs to have a co-star with chemistry. Carano is not that.

I guess she is the new geek goddess. Avatar, Star Trek and now Marvel Cinematic Universe.
