What They Say
Having lost two of their clan, the Seven Spears are planning a counterattack. Meanwhile, Jyuhei and one of the Hori women, Okei, have taken Lord Akinari hostage. They now have the object of their revenge, but the seven spears will not let this outrage occur without a bloodbath. Who will be sacrificed in the course of this feud?
Last volume I said it would take some serious skill on Jyubei’s part to escape the flower pit and the arrows raining down upon him. This proved to be true as it took the craftiness of three Hori women to save Jyubei’s neck. I enjoyed seeing it take the intervention of others to rescue Jyubei, instead of him pulling off some superhuman feat to escape a sure death. Situations like these should appeal to fans of ninja stories that didn’t like all the superhuman powers wielded by the ninjas in Basilisk.
Getting back to The Yagyu Ninja Scrolls. Unbeknownst to Jyubei, three of the Hori women masqueraded as Akinari’s escaped concubines to gain entrance to his house. Once inside they traded places with the three unconscious women wearing hannya masks. Then while Akinari and the remaining Spears of Aizu had their focus on Jyubei trapped in the flower pit, the Hori women drew bows and aimed their arrows at Akinari. This effectively forces the Spears to release Jyubei before being forced into the flower pit themselves. This is good character building for the women as it shows they are all ready to die to succeed in their revenge.
It seems like this should be the endgame. The Hori women could kill Akinari and then the Spears and make their escapes. However, Jyubei plans to dump Akinari in front of Lady Tenjuin’s palace in the same manner the Spears had been dumping the men they had kidnapped. This is a cool idea, as it will destroy Akinari’s position in Edo by humiliating him in front of the whole town. Moreover, it ultimately works too. Akinari is dragged through the town like a criminal before his Spears can rescue him. This causes Akinari to order the Spears to find the Hori women before he leaves Edo or they will have to commit hara kiri. Will the Spear’s dog be able to sniff out the Hori women in the next 24 hours, or will the Spear’s fate be sealed in self-inflicted trips to hell?
