Yates talks POTTER 5 & 6 Online

Quint from AICN had an opportunity to interview the various parties involved with Warner Bros's latest Harry Potter movie, Order of the Phoenix. Some of those interviews are well worth passing along (if the interview is more then just "fluff"). In this case, Quint had a chance to talk with director David Yates and it does show that he seems to have more of a read on the characters from the books in translation to the movies. Yates has also been selected to direct the next Harry Potter adaptation Half Blood Prince which will be begin shooting by the fall for a 2008 fall release in theaters.

In the interview, Quint and Yates did touch elements that which frequently got missed by earlier Potter directors. Points like Ginny having more of a role, setting the audiences up for Half Blood Prince. Scenes which had to get cut out of the film between Umbridge/Filch & Umbridge/Trelawney but will make the unrated Dvd. The relationship of Snape and Potter's individual storylines. The relationship between Dumbledore and Potter.

Quint: Another thing that I really loved about the movie, especially now that you’re coming back for the Sixth, that you laid so much bridgework. Just little things, like Ginny’s looks to Harry and Ron and Hermione’s relationship starting to show the first signs of growing to something more than friends… Was that intentional on your part to make sure all that was included?

David Yates: Yeah, no. Some of them weren’t really scripted. You’re on the floor and you suddenly go, “Oh fuck! As they’re all walking out, wouldn’t it be really really cool if…” you know that Ginny moment? I was just there and I thought, “Wouldn’t it be great?” You always want to keep that tension alive.

Actually, it seems that with a series of films one of the things that the audience kind of likes is setting up something that you’re going to resolve later on. If you’re going to make a series of films, it seems to me that that, therefore, gives you a liberty to do that.

So, we started to do a little bit of it. It’s more for the fans because I think if the audience don’t really know the films or the books, maybe they’ll not get that moment, but the fans certainly won’t.

You'll also read how director David Yates wants to keep the Potter Magical world conflicting more with a reality based world.

Decent topics were touched upon by Quint and Yates here.

I enjoy those bridges between films, and I hope Yates' inclusion of them encourages other directors to include such touches in future franchises.

Quint thought Order of the Phoenix was the weakest of the books? I certainly disagree with that. Decent interview otherwise. He seems to have his head in the right place for these films, and the trailer certainly looked ridiculously great. So I'm still pumped.

Order of the Phoenix was definately not the weakest book. It was simply annoying and unfair: the Ministry and Umbridge.

I also thought she TERRIBLY overplayed the teen angst in the book. My cousin Oren, who was the same age as Harry when this book came out, was kind of offended on behalf of all teenagers for some of Harry's behavior in certain parts of the book. But DAMN did the 5th book give us all somebody new to hate! I think it's a shame that the lady who plays Professor Sprout int he movies plays Professor Sprout. She looks JUST like how I picture Umbridge every time I read the book.

I haven`t read the Potter books, and may never but I am a fan of the movies. IMHO, they gotten better and better with every movie. OOTP looks pretty damn cool from what I have seen so far.
