Anton Yelchin (Charlie Bartlett) is in negotiations to star as post-apocalyptic warrior Kyle Reese in director McG's new Terminator movie, says The Hollywood Reporter. David Campbell Wilson, John Brancato and Michael Ferris wrote the screenplay though scribe Paul Haggis may be coming on board for a rewrite and some additions.

Yelchin will play a teen version of Reese, the man who fathered world savior John Connor in the original "Terminator" film.

Christian Bale will play John Connor in the film, produced by the Halcyon Co. and set for a Warner Bros. release on May 22, 2009.

Reese, one of the children who survived a machine-driven nuclear holocaust, befriends Marcus (Sam Worthington), an early edition of the Terminator cyborg played in previous films by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

In McG's film, the character is a young version of the one played by Michael Biehn, who traveled back in time in the original to impregnate Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) and father the world's future savior.

The film picks up with their son (Bale), now in his 30s, fighting desperately to save a decimated civilization against machines that have taken control.

Terminator will hit theaters May 22, 2009.

It would be cool if Derek Reese were in the movie, too.

I don't care what anyone says, I think this is gonna be cool. I think McG will do a fine job. Have a little faith people, I mean if people can believe some dude rose from the dead after 3 days, why can't McG make an awesome movie? I am glad to see Reese is going to be in it, it keeps the flow of the movies, and with Paul Haggis coming on for a rewrite, I am even more excited.

UberGeek... I thought the same thing. They could even have a small cameo by Brian Austin Green (he wasn't completely terrible in the role).

I thought McG actually made an awesome film in We Are Marshall. Now the question is can he make an awesome sci-fi/action film without all the over the top crap in the Charlie's Angels films?

I wonder though if the line about Sam Worthington's character being an early version of a Terminator is a major spoiler for the film. This could especially be the case since he befriends Kyle Reese in the film.

Have to say, rghtiger, that the latest press release did reveal more than expected...

Still not sure what "Earlier version of Arnold model" mean..

Did it mean an earlier model below T-800...As in something we're already seeing in the Sarah Connor Chronicles...or did it mean the actually T-800 model in earlier version.

lol Sometimes, these press releases are not to be trusted..like the whole Star Trek-Ryder playing Human mother ordeal last summer.

"Now the question is can he make an awesome sci-fi/action film without all the over the top crap in the Charlie's Angels films?"

The answer is No.

Can this film be saved with Christian Bale and now some rewrites by Paul Haggis?.........Yes.

By the way, isn't this kid going to be in the Justice League movie?

Why yes, Hanso...yes, he is. :)

And he's in the upcoming Star Trek reboot...Probably multiple picture deal.

In fact...Yelchin likely has a multiple picture deal with WB for Terminator now, a multiple picture deal with WB for Justice League..and a multiple picture deal with Paramount for Trek.

This kids gonna be as busy as Shia in the next few years.

Thanks Jarrod

I thought he was, didn't remember he was going to be in Star Trek also.

Whiskeymovie, I agree with you completely.
As for Yelchin, I thought he did a pretty good job in Alpha Dog, but I don't think I've seen him anywhere else.

If you all remember the first Terminator movie, Reese had dreams of the future. In one scene he saw several different terminators coming in to kill everyone and none were Arnold. The Early editions, were not perfect as the Arnold version though, that is, in their human imitation. So, I can see where that is coming from.
