The movie fans over at Entertainment Weekly have published a new “Greatest” list, this time focusing on action stars. Basically, they count down the 25 Awesome Action Heroes as they see it in the world of genre cinema. Their list is open to interpretation. At the very least, serious genre fans can question the list.

Click the link above for pictures and reasoning behind their decisions but here it is in a nutshell.

25. Toshiro Mifune—Seven Samurai (1954)
24. Steven Seagal---Under Siege (1992)
23. Sean Connery---Goldfinger (1964)
22. Kurt Russell---Escape From New York (1981)
21. Anne Parillaud---La Femme Nikita (1990)
20. Antonio Banderas---Desperado (1995)
19. Burt Lancaster---The Crimson Pirate (1952)
18. Sylvester Stallone---Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)
17. Tom Cruise---Mission Impossible III (2006)
16. Jean Reno---The Professional (1994)
15. Jackie Chan---Drunken Master II (1994)
14. Uma Thurman---Kill Bill. Vol 1 (2003)
13. Errol Flynn---The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
12. Matt Damon---The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
11. Bruce Lee---Enter the Dragon (1973)
10. Peter Weller---Robocop (1987)
9. William Holden---The Wild Bunch (1969)
8. Arnold Schwarzenegger—Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)
7. Chow Yun-Fat---Hard Boiled (1992)
6. Russell Crowe---Gladiator (2000)
5. Keanu Reeves---The Matrix (1999)
4. Mel Gibson---The Road Warrior (1982)
3. Harrison Ford---Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
2. Sigourney Weaver---Aliens (1986)
1. Bruce Willis---Die Hard (1988)

As I said, it’s as questionable as every other list anyone compiles in the world of genre entertainment. I can name a few factors that ran through my head while reading it. Steven Seagal is on this list but Chuck Norris isn’t?? Peter Weller & Arnold S. are ranked higher then Bruce Lee? For what, using guns? I’m not sure about choices of movies attached to each actor as well. One would think Arnold S. in Commando was a lot more action oriented then his role as the Terminator in T2. At least, they're consistent in their #1 choice. Over the summer, they chose Die Hard as the Greatest Action Film of All Time. It makes sense they’d place the star of the film on the #1 spot for this list.

But enough of my thoughts for this Mania Discussion. What are your thoughts? Who would make your top 25 list of “Most Awesome Action Heroes”? Who would be your top 10?

there are quite a few that I don't think need to be on this list... But the over-all gist of it is right.. But what about Bruce Campbell? (evil dead and darkman) One that I feel should be on the list but is little heard of is Terrance Hill (They Call Me Trinity Or SuperFuzz).. La Femme Nikita? Tom Cruise? Uma Thurman? WTF? Please...

I love Alien and Aliens, but I'm sorry Indy's got her beat, but Die Hard is the greatest action movie, so how can you not give it to Bruce.
As for the rest of the list, all good movies, but my order would be completely different. I certianly wouldn't have Robo beating Rambo or Bourne.

No Gene Hackman in French Connection or Steve McQueen in Bullitt? Some of the little kids who made this list need an education.

But also no Totem Pole Maguire from SPIDERPIG, No one from PIGFORMERS and no Hal E. Berry-- says alot about box office totals--they dont mean shit except for how much Hollywood execs get to line their pockets with YOUR MONEY.

There are, of course, several disagreeable elements about this list; namely, the fact that it was created as a hindsight to "Live Free or Die Hard". Although, clearly, Willis and the Die Hard series are in the top 10 (AT LEAST!!) of best action flicks/actors. Naturally Chuck Norris should be on there. If Segal is on the list, you shouldn't be with out Jean Claude or Dolph Lundgren. Chow Yun Fat deserves more credit (as he's been a mega international action star since the beginning of film) as does Bruce Lee (because.... he's f***in Bruce f***in Lee). Mifune I feel is an honorary member of this list and Peter Weller (RoboCop) is a history teacher, not an actor. ... skipping skipping... Alien's comment is disgusting... and... hey, let's add John Candy or better... Nathan Lane to the list.

I don't get this list. Is it for a single movie or for body of work?
And where the hell is Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson and The Duke? This list is bullshit.

This list is purely subjective. Anyone can make a list and it will always appear different. Don't take it personally folks. Just take it with a grain of salt.

When I read the list, it only sparked fond memories of when I saw the movies for the first time. It also made me think of what other actors that were left out, whether intenional or accidently forgotten is irrelivant. Anyway to each their own.

Well put woodwraith, well put indeed.

A great list and good to see actors of an earlier era on the list also some memorable female leads. Bruce Lee is however the king, no one before or since has reached the level he did, his speed and explosive power and complete confidence of his art are unmatched.

Makes me want to get a Robocop trilogy after the winner of the format wars for DVD. Damn war!
