Your DVD Shopping Bag for December

Family Guy, Lost or Inglourious Basterds what’s it going to be?

By Robert T. Trate     December 01, 2009

Something Something Something Dark Side arrives on December 22, 2009 on Blu-ray and DVD

Here it is December already. With a lack of any big titles this week (no, I don’t consider Terminator Salvation a big title) I thought I would spotlight the entire month of December. To take it even one step further I have supplied links to all these titles. All you need to do press control and right click your mouse and you can put these titles in your Amazon Wish List. If you don’t know what an Amazon Wish List is then you really need to get with the times. What I found odd about the following titles is that there are still so many must have DVDs and Blu-rays arriving so close to the big gift giving holidays. This is odd to me because so many people get their shopping done ahead of time which leaves these titles out of all the gift giving festivities. Hopefully enough gift cards and gift certificates find their way to you so that you can pick them up just the same.
December 8th
Next week promises some of the best titles of the year. Lost the complete fifth season arrives but the Dharma Initiative Orientation kit looks to be the version to buy. If this box set is any indication to what a complete series special edition could be I’d hold out until then. Then again the show could pull an X-Files or a Twin Peaks and not be worth completing anyway. For the true die hard film aficionado the Criterion Collection of 25 Films of Akira Kurosawa is an incredible deal but if you have already made the leap to Blu-ray I would hold out just a little bit longer. Finally there are those Ultimate Editions of Harry Potter. If only they would have done right by all those special features in the beginning and not trapped then behind some odd game. To this day I still haven’t seen them. I stopped buying Potters a while ago and have decided to get the Blu-ray box set when it is all done. Warner Brothers better include the Ultimate Editions in that set.
December 15th
There are multiple editions of Inglourious Basterds and depending on your level of fandom and the money in your wallet you can get the one that matters most. Be warned Tarantino usually releases other editions later (except for Kill Bill) and the Weinsteins need money to save their company so we might see another Basterds in the near future. Star Trek the Original Series will be released in a complete Blu-ray set this week and if season 3 is anything like season one (see review) you have to have it. Plus there is that little incentive to see the first episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before” with different music, different scenes and a different opening monologue.
The Mel Brooks Collection on Blu-ray: Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, History Of The World Part 1, Robin Hood Men In Tights, Silent Movie, To Be Or Not To Be, Twelve Chairs Blu-ray
The Sherlock Holmes Collection (Grand Moff Tarkin as Holmes, that’s Peter Cushing to the rest of the world)
December 22nd
So close to zero hour and District 9 gets this for a release date? The best part is that you can go out and buy it for yourself and not have to worry about someone else giving it to you. By far one of the best films of the year, in any genre, and a must have for the collection. The other big title is one that will eventually find its way into the Family Guy season set but Family Guy Presents: Something Something Something Dark Side willthe perfect last minute gift for any fan of Star Wars, Family Guy or just plain comedy.
December 29th
There are only two measly big genre titles for the post holiday season. 9 wasn’t all I hoped it would be but Jennifer’s Body was a complete surprise. Much like Eli Roth’s Cabin Fever it is a throw back to horror films of the late seventies and early eighties. Megan Fox uses her cardboard acting style to her horrific advantage. However it is Diablo Cody’s writing and Amanda Seyfried’s acting that really make this a picture worth watching.
In years past I have always noticed a huge drop off in titles come January. I would usually give you a “stock up on the movies now” speech here but that doesn’t seem to be true. There are a lot of great titles and some incredible re-releases coming in January. I cannot wait for the special edition of Kingdom of the Spiders starring William Shatner and the sleeper hit Black Dynamite.

District 9 Blu Ray has the demo for God of War 3 so get that shit because the demo owns as does D9!

And you are right Trate, hold out if you ca for the entire Lost set next year, that's what I've been doing.  Stopped at Season 3.  If you have Netflix the holding out is much easier because they currently have seasons 1-4 for Instant Viewing and a couple of weeks after season 5 releases they will have too.

That Dharma box set is so sweet though Hanson!!!!!

hanso 12/1/2009 7:33:03 AM

Trate, the box set gives warm feelings and brings happiness into my life but imagine the entire series box set.

themovielord 12/1/2009 8:08:15 AM

Hopefully with a Dharma jump suit!!!!

I really want the Mel Brooks set, but it needs to be lower at Amazon than 33% off, especially after all the fun of Black Friday. I'll bite at 50% off.

AK 100: 25 Films of Akira Kurosawa (Criterion Collection)

Family Guy Presents: Something Something Something Dark Side

Evil Monkey!

redhairs99 12/2/2009 12:54:10 PM

I don't know that Something, Something, Something Dark Side will make it into a Family Guy season set.  I could be wrong, but I don't think that Blue Harvest was included in my of my sets. Neither has the Stewie Griffin Story been included in the sets.
