The Review!
After three very long weeks of waiting, I finally received this very expensive DVD. The first thing that caught my eye was the beautifully designed cover art. I wonder why Region 1 Discs can't put more effort into their packaging like the Region 2 DVDs. The DVD comes in a slipcase similar to the Fushigi Yuugi DVD boxset. It was a lot looser than the Fushigi Yuugi boxset and so was easy to slip in and out.
The menu system for the DVD is very, very interesting. The menu uses a animated background from the movie and gives you all the character's name. So as your sitting there in the menu screen you will see a small anime preview of the movie and all the characters that are in movie. I can't think of any Region 1 DVD menu system that uses this system. Another nice feature of this menu/DVD system is when the movie ends it will actually play all the extras on the DVD in order automatically. This saves you the time of going to each of the extras to view them.

The booklet included with the DVD was a 10-page full color illustration of the characters and scenes from the movie. If you are a YUA fan then you will drool all over for this booklet (don't get it too wet though). ^_^ If you want the images from the booklet, just go to the You're Under Arrest Movie website I made, the URL is listed at the end of this review.

Overall the show it self is very beautifully done with full anamorphic transfer. The animation in the movie is definitely an improvement over the OAV and TV series. The show itself has turned from a comedic, light hearted style to a serious and explosive movie. Miyuki and Nasutmi, the two main characters of the show have matured to suit the mood of the movie, which was presented in a serious and mature way. Which reminded me of another great movie: Patlabor 2: the Movie. In some ways I would say that the Patlabor Movie and the YUA movie are the same, except that the characters have been changed. As for the show itself, saddly to say Kwan and I both have no clue as to What is going on, since we both don't understand Japanese - darn that Japanese language. The only thing we know for sure is that there is a lot of talking and someone is trying taking over Tokyo - what else is new - and Miyuki and Nasutmi has to save the day with one of the most outrageous car/motor/helicopter scene ever. Of course we could tell you more but what fun would that be.

Of course there are also few drawbacks on this DVD, first I never understood the still picture/image frame they were using while people were running in some places. This DVD is also lacking on extras, at least the Nadesico Movie DVD had a music video. Also the price of for this DVD is $154.00 USD and for most people looking at paying $154.00 USD for a single DVD is scary. Well at least in my mind the YUA Movie was a great buy since Kwan and I are both huge You're Under Arrest fans it was worth every penny Tong spent. Now if only we knew someone with a DTS setup so we can test the DTS sound. I have a You're Under Arrest Movie page up at http://www.umanime.dhs.org/yua_movie. The page includes image scans from the movie and a detailed movie review and comments. Please feel free to drop by. ^_^
