The word "geek" has lost its meaning. What it used to be is now mainstream.

I hate to admit that I'm starting agree with Patton Oswalt's editorial from a couple of years back. Wikipedia and the internet as whole has made geek culture obsolete and mainstream at the same time.

The good and huge silver lining is all the content and big budget comic book, fantasy and sci/fi films we are treated to today. But the novelty is gone, the uniqueness, the niche categories because everything now is made for the general audience, for mass consumption...........for everyone, and not necessarily for US

Wow that felt like an eulogy

Wise, as long as some kid gets a "Kick Me" sign stuck on his back in high school it still isn't quite mainstream.

re: meaning of the word "geek"

Originally, a geek was a sideshow or freakshow attraction; a sort of wildman that usually was featured eating live animals, like chickens or pidgeons.

Remember: bad used to mean bad, now it's good. Sick used to mean ailing, now it means awesome.

Wise, you're somewhat right, but since we still have the power and the voice (online, in particular) to lead dissent when it's done wrong, I think that geek culture is still here to lead.  Besides, if mainstreaming it means that more comic book fans and sci-fi aficionados get laid in high school, then the suffering that we all endured as kids in our "niche" cliques, then who cares?  It means that our society is evolving a bit.  (And when the ZomPoc finally sweeps across our world, it'll still be the geeks who survive, and the ignorant masses will be eaten and/or become target practice.)

Monkeyfoot, I think the kids these days just post "Kick Me" signs on the kid's Twitter page now, or something.

This will be fun.  I love the Geek & Sundry channel and I'm constantly on Nerdist as well.

Geek has definitely seeped into mainstream culture in the past decade but you can still tell who the real geeks are vs those who have simply adopted some facet of geekdom because they think it's cool.  But I agree that the spreading of the culture can only be a good thing.

Will any of these channels offer porn?  That's what "geeks" really need.
