It seems the on-going rumor that Viggo Mortensen was virtually set as General Zod in Zack Snyder's Superman has turned out to be false. Sure, the character General Zod will once again become the big villain in Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming reboot of the DC superhero but it won't be played by the Lord of the Rings star. The studio and co-producer Legendary Pictures have sent out the following press announcement which confirms Michael Shannon ("Boardwalk Empire") as the man who will be pitted against the Man of Steel:

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Michael Shannon will star in the role of General Zod in director Zack Snyder's new Superman film, titled Man of Steel.

Snyder stated, "Zod is not only one of Superman's most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don't. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role."

As General Zod, Shannon will go toe-to-toe with Henry Cavill, who plays the new Clark Kent/Superman in the film. The main cast also includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent.

Michael Shannon was honored with an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Sam Mendes' Revolutionary Road, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Shannon was most recently seen in the award-winning HBO drama series "Boardwalk Empire," from executive producer Martin Scorsese.

He will next be seen in Sony Pictures Classics' Take Shelter from director/writer Jeff Nichols.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Man of Steel will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. He will fly into theaters December 2012.

Deja Vu much?

goirish83 4/10/2011 9:02:10 PM

Was really hoping for Brainiac in this movie.

Someone had told me that they heard a Metallo and General Lane rumor. I guess we can still hope that Zod isn't the only villain

As for this casting, Shannon is a terrific actor. He kills in Boardwalk Empire as the obsessed and confused  FBI agent. And the guy just looks perfect to play any bad/mean guy

Pendragon0 4/10/2011 9:45:34 PM

Maybe seeing the destruction from a full blown throwdown between two beings in Supes weight class, Lane builds Metallo?

Setting up for the next one?

Never seen Sarafin, but I had gotten used to the idea of Viggo.  He can pull off the menace when he wants to.

I don't know who he is, but whatever.  I think Snyder and Nolan will deliver.  By the way, after watching Justice League Unlimited, I kind of wish somebody would get Clancey Brown to play Lex Luthor in live action.

Outstanding!! Shannon will bring a nice intensity to the screen. I have high hopes for this film. Superman has always been one of my fav super's

Wiseguy 4/10/2011 10:22:07 PM

lol @ Pendragon0, I think you got Shannon mixed up with Sarafin. Sarafin is too big a name to be playing Zod and WB probably wouldn't be able to afford him anyway not to mention that he's busy here at mania

Kensai331 4/10/2011 10:40:31 PM

Phenomenal actor! I think it's possible this may turn out to be a film where once again the villain steals the show.
